CloudStack VDC - FAQs and Known Limitations

FAQs and known limitations

This page collects the most common questions and current limitations for CloudStack VDC. Check this page when something does not behave as you expect before contacting support.

General questions

How many CloudStack VDC subscriptions can I have on my account?

One. Only a single CloudStack VDC subscription is permitted per Zettagrid account. If you need additional isolated resource pools, contact support@zettagrid.com.

Which zones can I deploy in?

At launch, Perth (PER01) is generally available. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin and Brisbane are under development and will be released progressively.

Where do I create and manage instances?

In the Apache CloudStack portal at https://portal.acs.zettagrid.com. This single portal manages instances in all of your zones - unlike VMware Cloud Director, which is provisioned per location.

How do I log in if I am already signed into MyAccount?

You will be signed into the Apache CloudStack portal automatically. Open your CloudStack VDC subscription in MyAccount and click the screen icon in the subscription top menu.

How do I log in directly without going through MyAccount?

Visit https://portal.acs.zettagrid.com, select the Single sign-on tab, and click Login. Use your standard Zettagrid credentials.

Networking and IPs

My new public IP is not visible in CloudStack - why?

Public IPs only appear inside the Apache CloudStack portal after you assign them to a zone in MyAccount. Open the Manage IPs and Create VPCs dialog in MyAccount and assign IPs to the correct zone first.

Why does my new subscription show "You must allocate IP addresses and create VPCs before building VMs"?

A new CloudStack VDC has no IPs allocated to a zone and no VPC yet. This is the expected first-time-setup state. Follow the steps on the Managing IPs and VPCs page to clear the banner.

SNAT vs SNAT + DNAT - which should I choose?

Pick SNAT (1 IP, outbound only) if your instances only need to reach the internet. Pick SNAT + DNAT (2 IPs) if you need to publish ports from your instances to the public internet, for example to run a public web server.

How do I delete a VPC?

First delete the guest network (and any instances using it) inside the VPC in the Apache CloudStack portal. Then return to MyAccount and delete the VPC from the Manage IPs and Create VPCs dialog. Deleting the VPC in MyAccount first will fail or leave the network orphaned.

When I want to add another Guest Network it returns a “Request Failed“ error?

If you want to add another internal/private network for your Instances/VM’s you need to add it via the VPC.

Select -> In Left Menu NETWORK → VPC → Your VPC → In Center Menu Networks → “Add new Network Tier”

Storage and instances

Do I need secondary storage?

Only if you intend to upload your own ISOs, register your own templates, or store instance snapshots. If you are only using the public template catalogue, secondary storage is optional.

I want to use an SSH key to authenticate - what do I do?

Create or register the key pair in Compute → SSH Key Pairs in the CloudStack portal before you create the instance. You cannot attach a key pair to an instance after it has been launched.

How are Microsoft Windows VMs charged?

Windows VMs are automatically audited and charged in arrears based on actual usage. There is no need to pre-allocate Windows licences just to deploy a Windows instance, but reserving licences may attract a different commercial rate - check with your account manager.

How do I apply Affinity Rules to my VM?

Create Group under - Compute-> Affinity Groups

To apply the rule to your Instances/vm’s you need to shutdown your Instance/VM.

A new button will appear in your Instance bar for you to apply the Affinity

Commercial and lifecycle

How do I add or remove CPU, RAM or storage?

Open the subscription in MyAccount and click the Resize icon (circle with up and down arrows). See the Resizing and Cancelling page for details.

How do I cancel my CloudStack VDC subscription?

Delete all resources in the CloudStack portal, delete the VPC in MyAccount, then click the bin icon on the subscription in MyAccount. See the Resizing and Cancelling page for the full procedure.

Can I migrate workloads between VMware VDC and CloudStack VDC?

Yes, but this is not a self-service operation. Contact support@zettagrid.com for migration assistance - the team will advise on supported paths, image conversion and downtime.

Known limitations (current release)

  • Kubernetes service is not yet enabled. The Kubernetes menu item is visible in the CloudStack portal but the service is disabled in this phase of release. It will be enabled in a future release.

  • One subscription per account. Only one CloudStack VDC subscription per Zettagrid account is permitted at this time.

  • Self-service migration between VMware and CloudStack is not available. Migration requires a support engagement.

  • Zones under development. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin and Brisbane are not yet generally available.

  • Instance Deletions. Do not delete multple instances at the same time consecutively, it will be moved to a scedule and you might not be able to deploy more VM’s till cleaned out. In some cases you might need to log ticket to removed Instances marked for deletion if stuck
